Art assignment 2 : Surrealism – Lucia Hartini

5 differences & Similarities (techniques and colors) between

“Lelaki di bulan Mei 1998” (Young Man of May 1998)
by Lucia Hartini

and

“Dreaming” by Samy Charnin

1) The use of colors in Lucia Hartini’s artwork is more vibrant and brighter. She make use of different primary and secondary color. While Samy charnin make use of mainly black, which is not consider as a color. He then make use of orange to bring out the contrast between the fishes and the background.

2) Lucia Hartini’s work are painted base on the outdoor. As seen in her work, mountains, waves and planets can be seen in the background of her artwork. While for Samy Charnin, he painted base on an environment which looks like a house, or an enclosed area. This is seen in his work where a figure is looking out of the window with his back view facing the viewer.

3) Lucia hartini’s work are more “realistic” compare to Samy charnin’s work. “Realistic” in a sense that Lucia hartini painted the figure in a real life proportion where she includes the details of the human hair and human body. She also make use of dark tone to highlight the direction of the light. While Samy charnin does not as he only paint the figure in a simple form. Such that it is not in proportion and is not detail. We can only see the contour of the figure.

4)Brush strokes used in Lucia hartini’s work are rather short and coppy as we can see in the texture of the mountains and waves where different stroke of colors were used to create layers in to the background. While for Samy Charnin’s work, the brushstrokes are smooth as many parts of the canvas is only painted with one color, without blending and does not have the attempt of creating texture on to it.

5) However, both work were similar in a sense that they both gives viewer the idea of impossible. As shown in Hartini’s work, it is impossible to have a figure standing in this scenario and also for Samy Charnin’s work, it suggest fish swimming in the air, which is also highly unrealistic.

6)  There is similarity in terms of using of the sky and clouds in their work to give viewer a sense of freedom, dreams and imagination.
